Should grammar be taught in isolation?

ad+1

This kind of method is one of the traditionalists favourite to teach grammar. It is widely known as the deductive approach. In this approach, grammar is being taught isolated with any other thematic approach or activity. The procedure is vividly clear. First, it starts with the presentation of a rule and is followed by example in which the rule is applied. The grammar rule is presented and the learner engages with it through the study and manipulation of examples.
Teaching grammar isolated without use of any context or an outline is a traditional way of teaching grammar. As quoted by Stephen Graham (2007), traditional grammar attempts, usually within a single language, to analyse and elucidate the constituents of any given well-formed sentence. The focus of attention is on surface structure, not meaning. The main benefit of traditional grammar is that it gives learners a basic understanding of the building blocks of language, which can help in improving their writing skills.

It is vividly clear that teaching grammar in isolation is suitable to help a beginner in grabbing the basis of the language as grammar is the main building blocks of the language. So, it is better to teach the beginner with this method; the kids are exceptional. The focus group here is adult group who’s starting to learn about the language and full of curiosity about the structure of the language. So it is better to teach them grammar in isolation in a certain condition.
