Based
on Malaysia’s Mathematics curriculum, fraction and decimals being taught in the
classroom with a flow within three years of schooling session. In KBSR,
fractions being taught since standard 4 meanwhile decimals being taught only
from standard 4 on wards. These two topics have been organized nicely to be
taught by stages. For introduction to the topics, pupils will have to mastered
understanding and the use of the vocabulary related to fractions and decimals.
To enhance pupil’s understanding about the topic, a few skills will be teach
such as naming and writing activities.
For the next stage, pupils will
learn on how to apply the four basic mathematical operation towards these two
topics. The basic operation involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division. Pupils also will learn to perform mixed operations between these four
basic operation. Lastly, pupil will be taught on how to solve daily problem
involving these two topic as fractions and decimals are widely being used
during this technology ages. This last stage of learning is tremendously
important to make sure that pupils are able to implement what they have learnt
about these topics in during their daily life routine. To make the learning
session more meaningful, teacher can help pupils to carry out the activity on
solving daily life activity involving these two topics that being brought to
the classroom. The next table, will shows what primary pupils in Malaysia will
learn on these two topics.
As seen above, the subtopic for fractions is
more than decimals. It is more varied than decimals because it involve
different types of fraction such as proper fractions, improper fractions and
mixed numbers. However, the same thing between these two topics are, both
involves with the four basic operation system. Either pupils like it or not,
they have to mastered the four basic operations before they can obtain the
learning objective for these two topics.
